The large percentage of Geostationary (Geo) satellites provide communication services from one part of the Earth to another. Direct TV is one example and that small dish on rooftops is receiving signals from a Geo satellite.

The ground station sends up a feed from a large high gain antenna on the ground to the satellite, which then will demultiplex the signal into multiple sub signals and route them to various downlink antennas, which transmit the signal to a ground antenna.

Binding Energy of a Satellite

The binding energy of a satellite can be defined as the minimum amount of energy required to be supplied to it in order to free the satellite from the gravitational influence of the planet (i.e. in order to take satellite from the orbit to a point at infinity).

Binding energy gives us an idea about the energy by which the satellite is bound to the planet. This binding energy will be used to overcome the gravitational force of attraction between the Satellite and the planet.
