Pleiotropy is the phenomenon in which a single gene product may produce multiple or more than one phenotypic effect. Phenylketonuria is a disorder caused by mutation in the gene coding the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. The affected individuals show hair and skin pigmentation and mental retardation.
