a) if X stands for magnetic susceptibility of a given material, identify the class of materials for which i) -1>=X<0

ii) 0<X<ε(ε is a small positive number). write the range of relative magnetic permeability of these materials.

Best answer

(a) i) -1>=X<0, magnetic susceptibility is negative, material is diamagnetic.

ii) 0<X<ε, material is paramagnetic.

The range of relative magnetic permeability of the diamagnetic material is 0 ≤ μr < 1 and for the paramagnetic material is 0 < μr< 1 + ε

(b) figure (1) shows the behavior of magnetic field lines when the diamagnetic material is placed in an external field.

figure (2) shows the behavior of magnetic field lines when the paramagnetic material is placed in an external field.
