— Very common in South India-very often sadly neglected in their maintenance.

— Cheering sight when they are full.

— Shallow—but less evident because the water is silt-laden and throws the light back-the bottom, therefore, does not show up.

— Play a vital role in South Indian agriculture.

— Some are suprisingly large and it is a beautiful sight to see the sunrise or sunset over one of them.

— The colour of the water of the rainfed tanks varies with the nature of the earth of the catchment area.

Detailed Answer :

Rainfed tanks are very common in South India. They are quite shallow but since the water is silt-laden and throws the light back, the bottom is not clearly visible. These tanks are very important for agriculture. Some of the tanks are huge and the sight of the sun rising or setting over them is really beautiful. The colour of the water of these tanks varies due to the silt which is suspended in it. The finest particles of soil remain floating in the water whereas the larger particles settle down.
