Law of Independent Assortment :

‘Law of independent assortment’ states that when the two homozygous parents differing in two pairs of contrasting traits are crossed, the inheritance of one pair is independent of the other. For example, when a pea plant of yellow round seed is crossed with a green wrinkled seed, 9 pea plants bearing yellow round seeds, 3 pea plants bearing yellow wrinkled seeds, 3 pea plants bearing green round seeds and 1 pea plant bearing green wrinkled seeds are produced in F2 generation.

Looking at the above results, it is obvious that the character of yellow colour of the seed is nowhere linked with the round shape of the seed, and vice versa. This is due to the fact that in the above cross, the two pairs of characters segregate independently implying independent assortment of characters.
