The main function of the Security Council is the preservation of international peace and security.
The Council can investigate disputes and recommend means of settling them peacefully.
If a country attacks another country it can apply a variety of sanctions against that country such as severence of diplomatic relations or taking of collective military measures.
Secretary General is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council.
