Distinguish the following pair of compounds

(a) Propanal and Propanone

(b) Acetophenone and benzophenone

(c) Phenol and benzoic acid

(a) Propanal gives a silver mirror or greyish ppt. on oxidation by Tollen’* reagent but propanone does not.

(b) Acetophenone gives a positive iodoform test with sodium hypo iodide as it has a terminal methyl ketonic (-COCH3) group unlike benzophenone.

(c) Benzoic acid on treatment with sodium hydrogen carbonate produces efferversence due to evolution of CO2, as it is more acidic than phenol.
