Define food additive. How is it different from ‘food preservative’.

The food and **** Administration (FDA) has defined food additive as a substance or a mixture of substances, other than the basic food stuff, which is present as a result of any aspect of production, processing, storage or packaging, it comprises of preservatives, antioxidants and many others.

According to FDA “Chemical preservative is any substance which is capable of inhibiting, retarding or arresting the process of fermentation, acidification or other decomposition of food or masking any of the evidence of any such process or neutralizing the acid generated by any such process. But does not include salt, vinegar, sugar, spices or oils extracted from spices.
