John Hallock was not in a position to contradict Jenkins. His magazine had been the only magazine to print his stories. Secondly, Jenkins had an uncanny knowledge as to when the landlord or the grocer was pestering him. John needed some extra money to pay for the bills. Hence, it was difficult to contradict Jenkins.
