What is the role of physical activity and its effect on ageing?

(i) There is a progressive decline in strength for most of the muscle group. This is primarily due to reduced muscle mass that reflects a loss of protein due to ageing but regular physical exercise helps in protein retention, resulting in delaying the strength decrease with ageing.

(ii) Endurance decline slowly but agility decline abruptly. These parameters can be maintained within the limits, if participation in physical activity is continued.

(iii) Ageing affects the ability to detect a stimulus and process the information in nervous system to produce a response. However, it is observed that people who continue their physical acticity in later years of life they response significantly faster and their nervous system works as actively as in the young age.

(iv) There is change in cardiovascular function with the advancement of age bur regular exercise enables aged individuals to retain cardiovascular functioning much above the level of inactive individual of the same age.
