Account for the following.

(a) F2 is stronger oxidizing agent than Cl2

(b) The acidic strength of oxoacids of chlorine follow: HClO > HClO2 > HClO3 > HClO4

(a) In F2 there is more inter electronic repulsion between F atoms due to the small size and therefore bond dissociation enthalpy of F2 is less than that of Cl2 (having large size). Also Fhas high hydration enthalpy than Clthat makes Eo F2/F- highest negative value than that of Eo Cl2/Cl- . Hence F2 is a stronger oxidizing agent than Cl2.

(b) The acidic strength follows the order HClO < HClO2< HClO3< HClO4 because the stability of their conjugate bases are ClO- < ClO2 - < ClO3 - < ClO4 - because greater the number of O atoms, more will be the dispersal of negative charge more will be the stability and more will be the acid strength.
