A steel bar of a diameter of 20mm and a length of 400mm is subjected to a tensile force of 40kN. Determine (a) the tensile stress and (b) the axial strain developed in the bar if the Young’* modulus of steel E = 200 kN/mm2 (Fig.1.5).

Diameter of the bar,

d = 20mm

Cross-sectional area

A = (π/4)d2

There are no units of strain, as strain is change in length per unit length.
