Akbar and Tansen went to Hari Das’ ashrama and stayed there for several days but Hari Das did not sing. Tansen himself started singing a song taught to him by Guru and knowingly introduced a false note in between. This jolted the Guru. He rebuked Tansen for it and started singing the song himself correctly. The mood came upon him and he forgot himself. The ruse was successful because Tansen knew very well that the Guru would sing only if his emotions were stirred and a spontaneous urge was created in his heart.
