What is that dirge-like murmur that I hear Like the sea breaking on a shingle beach ? It is the tree’* lament, an eerie speech, That haply to the unknown land may reach.

Context: The poetess describes her intense love for nature. In the morning from her · open window she looks at the tree which looks very beautiful. She looks at the grey baboon sitting on the tree and looking at the sunrise. So she is reminded of her old friends and becomes sad.

Explanation: The poetess says that she does not love this tree due to its beauty. But she has very old attachment with it. She has played in its shadow with her friends. This tree reminds her of the love which she had for those friends. She is filled with feelings of love. In the mean time she hears a low lamentation. This sound is similar to the sound of sea water striking against the pebbles. She feels that it is the expression of grief from the tree. It fills her with ****. But she hopes that soon it will reach an unknown land.
