Context : This beautiful ballad is autobiographical because the poet points out his disappointed love with a French lady. He meets her in a meadow and presents her different kinds of flower garlands. That lady also loves him and takes him to her mysterious cave. She assures him that she is very faithful in her love for him.

Explanation : The knight awakes from his dream and finds himself on a cold hillside. He has dreamt many kings, princes and warriors who were warning him against the treacherous lady. So the knight is very much afraid and worried. This is the reason that he is staying here and wandering alone aimlessly. Although, due to cold, the sedge has dried up and the birds have gone to warmer places yet the knight is roaming alone.
