Definition - A strong magnetic field produced inside a solenoid can be used to magnetise a piece of magnetic material like soft iron, when placed inside the solenoid. The magnet so formed is called an electromagnet.

Working- When the switch is closed to make the strong current pass through the wrapped copper coil, it becomes strongly magnetised. When it is suspended vertically by a strong crane and its lower end is touched with a heavy iron sheet lying on the ground, it will stick to the sheet. The crane can easily lift the iron sheet.
