Aim : To test whether the solutions of given acids and bases contains ions or not.
Materials required : Beaker, graphite rods, 230V AC,bulb, conducting wires, HCl and NaOH solution.
Procedure :
(1) Prepare dilute solutions of an acid and a base say hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
(2) Connect two wires to graphite rods separately in a breaker as shown in the figure.
(3) Connect the two ends of wire to 230V AC plug and complete the circuit by connecting a bulb.
(4) Pour some dilute hydrochloric acid in a beaker and switch on current.
(5) Bulb glows, it indicates that there is flow of electric current through the solution.
(6) Repeat the experiment with dilute solution of NaOH, once again bulb glows.
Result :
Due to the presence of ions, aqueous solutions of acids and bases, conduct electricity
