How is the small intestine designed to absorb digested food ?

(1) Transport of the products of digestion from the small intestine into blood is called absorption.

(2) Internally, intestinal wall has a number of finger like projections called villi.

(3) Products of digestion are absorbed first into the villi and from there into the blood vessels and lymph vessels.

(4) Walls of small intestine help to take up maximum amount of digested food that has to be sent to various parts of the body through blood.
