Coefficient of linear expansion of copper is greater than that of iron. Therefor, when bimetallic strip made up of copper and iron is heated. Copper the expands more than the iron strip. Since the two are rivetted together, the bimetallic strip bends so as to allow more expansion in the Copper strip. As a result, the copper strip forms the outer i. e., convex side of the bent metallic strip.
