A furniture dealer deals in only two items tables & chairs. He has Rs. 1000 to invest and a space to store almost 60 pieces. A table costs him Rs. 500 and a chair at Rs 115. Assume that he can sell all the items that he buys. Formulate this problem as a LPP so that he maximizes his profit.

Best answer

Let x be the number of tables and y be the number of chairs that the dealer buys and sells.

The profit on table = Rs (550 - 500) = Rs 50

and the profit on a chair = Rs (115 - 100) = Rs 15

So, total profit z = 50x + 15y

Thus the mathematical form of given LPP is

maximize z = 50x + 15y

Subjected to, x + y ≤ 60

5x + y ≤ 100

and x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0
