Mitochondria called powerhouse of the cell are the organelles of cellular respiration. The mitochondria are bounded by a double unit membrane space. The outer membrane is smooth and the inner folded repeatedly into projections called cristae. The central portion of the mitochondrion encloses the matrix.
The matrix side of the inner membrane, including surfaces of cristae are bounded by lollipop like structures called Rackers particles or F0Ft complexes which help in ATP synthesis. Molecules necessary for electron transport are present. The matrix contains highly concentrated mixture of several enzymes Associated with kreb’* cycle! The matrix has DNA, RNA and 70s type of ribosomes.
