In this poem, the poet Dr Punyamchand ‘Manar’ has described the proud history of the various regions of India and also given beautiful descriptions of the various Indian cultures and traditions.

The land of India is the birthplace of many brave warriors, great saints, even Lord Rama and Lord Krishna themselves. This land gives great pleasure to the mind. Uttar Pradesh is home to many sacred sites such as Kashi, Prayag, Haridwar, Badrinath, Kedarnath (the latter three are part of present-day Uttarakhand

state). Even the voices of great poets, saints and thinkers such as Malik Mohammed, Kabir and Tulsidas have been born and heard in this state. It is also the birthplace of Lord Krishna. It is also the land of brave warriors and great saints.

On the forehead of India stand the Himalayas. The voices of Punjab Kesari, Tegh Bahadur and Guru Nanak were heard in this region. This whole world fears the roar of this land (India). Such is this land – the homeland of saints and brave warriors.

The green and nurturing environment of Haryana has given us great epics and texts such as the Vedas, the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita. On the banks of river Saraswati, the chants of Vedic priests is heard. This is the land of Arjuna, Bhima and Yudhistira. This is the land of Dharma and Karma, of ancient traditions and etiquette. It is the land of Indraprastha.

In Rajasthan, one can hear the roar of the Ranas and the clanging of the swords on the rocks of Haldighati. It was here that Rana Pratap fought bravely against the Mughal Emperor Akbar.

This is the land of white clouds, of Senani (Rajput warriors) and Jauhar (the act of self-immolation when a battle was lost). Such is the land of Rajasthan.

The land of Bihar is the land where our deceased ancestors are provided gratification. It was here that dacoits surrendered due to the efforts of J.P. (Jaya Prakash Narayan). This is the land of the great ancient universities of Nalanda and Vaishali. It is the land of Gautama Buddha and Mahaveer Jain.

In the south, the seas wash the feet of India. Tamil Nadu’* Kamba Ramayan (a version of the epic Ramayana written by the Tamil

poet Kamban), and the beautiful and diverse culture of Kerala and Andhra, the heroism of Chhatrapati Shivaji of Maharashtra, the serene, calm and sweet atmosphere of Malayagiri in Karnataka are all very inviting.

What can be said about the pride and respect of the home of nature, Karnataka? It is the land where Tipu Sultan and Rani Chennamma made great sacrifices, and their stories still reverberate among the land. The beauty, pride and respect of the land of Kannada is unparalleled.

The calm water flow of the river Cauvery, the home of Pampa Mahakavi, the vachanas of Basaveshwara and Akkamahadevi, the Darshan (sighting) of Ramanujacharya’ Melukote (where he stayed for 14 years), the land of Dharma (****) and tradition, the land of the fine arts and of classical music is the land of Karnataka. Such is the land of the motherland, India. Such is the rich tradition and history of India, the land of brave warriors and great saints.
