- There is currently no consensus regarding the definition of life.
- One popular definition is that organisms are open systems that maintain homeostasis, are composed of cells, have a life cycle, undergo metabolism, can grow, adapt to their environment, respond to stimuli, reproduce and evolve.
The seven characteristics of life include:
- responsiveness to the environment;
- growth and change;
- ability to reproduce;
- have a metabolism and breathe;
- maintain homeostasis;
- being made of cells; and.
- passing traits onto offspring.

- The term civilization basically means the level of development at which people live together peacefully in communities.
- Ancient civilization refers specifically to the first settled and stable communities that became the basis for later states, nations, and empires.
