Best answer

Formulation : Farther we travel, the more petrol we require, that is, the amount of petrol we need varies directly with the distance we travel.

Petrol needed for travelling 416km = 52litres

Petrol needed for travelling 96km = ?

Mathematical Description :

Let x = distance traveled

y = need of Petrol and y varies directly with x

So, y = Kx, where K is a constant.

can travel 416kilometres with 52litres of petrol.

So, y = 52, x = 416

Equation (1) describes the relationship between the petrol needed and distance travelled.

Step 2 : We want to find the petrol we need to travel 96kilometres. So we have to find the value of y when

x = 96. Putting x = 96 in (1), we have = 96/8 = 12

Step 3 . Interpretation:

Since y = 12, we need 12litres of petrol to travel 96kilometres.

Step 4. Validation of the result :

This result is valid only if all the conditions remain same i.e. mileage of car track on which car is running, gradient of the track (road), etc.
