Unpolarized light

The light having electric field vibrating in all possible directions.

Linearly Polarized light

The light wave having an electric field vibrating in only one direction.

Polaroid is made from quinine iodo sulphate. By suspending the herapathite crystals in nitrocellulose and then mounting between two sheets of glass, polaroids are formed. A polaroid has a characteristic plane called transmission plane. When unpolarised light falis on a polaroid, only the vibrations parallel to the transmission plane sets transmitted.
